Work in Progress: DR Bubbles & Anak Ikan - Part 3 - Kids Characters

For the moment, I'm pretty happy with the fish character. No it doesn't have a name yet, and won't be. The book is written in such a way that it allows the reader to give the fish a name :).

I think I can now move to the three children that have roles (talking parts) in the story.

There's a girl named Mimi. I assume she is around 3-4 years old, since she can talk properly, eats fried noodles, and innocently feed noodles to the fish.

Then there's 'Boy', who still carries around his feeding milk bottle. So he should be just below three (even though I've seen some 6 year-old carry those).

And there is Edi, who's able to pick up the small aquarium and shake it, because he thinks the fish likes it! Edi must be somewhat older to have that strength. Five years-old perhaps?

Here's my initial sketches:

These are new characters. The names (Mimi, Boy, Edi) were given by the author. My initial leaning was to re-use the kid characters that have already appeared in the earlier books (it's good practice as children can relate to what they have seen before, and helps marketing-wise too. It's like the Timmy sheep character, being a spin-off from Shaun the Sheep series).

But all my previous characters already have names. Well, their names are unknown to the readers, but they help me to remember :)

It looks like Edi has already appeared as Cak in the DR Bubbles & Baim series. Let's assume Edi is Cak's elder brother :)

And I wonder if Mimi's hair should be like the fried noodles that she loves so much (even her name sounds like noodles already - mee mee).

Or maybe this:

How to Create Fun-To-Read Children Picture Books

Have Fun Creating Your Own Picture Books Workshop, Bedok Library, Singapore - for the Asian Festival of Children's Content ( www.afcc.com.sg ). 31 May 2015. Photo courtesy of En Zamri Mohamad. For the past one year, I’ve had the privilege of sharing/giving talks to primary school students, university students, parents, fellow writers and librarians. Subject: How to create your own picture books for children With these sharing sessions, came great feedbacks. I think it would be useful to share some of what I shared during the sessions with you today. Hopefully we both can learn a thing or two, and can put them into good use :) What I would normally do is present slides on the ingredients of a children picture book (story, characters, settings, backgrounds, story arches, conflicts, scenes setups, motifs, and if the audiences are up to it - layers). BUDAYA BERTERUS TERANG, ANDA BERANI TEGUR BOS?

Saya sedang menelaah buku THE NO RULES RULES. US: candor) (dalam k...
